Zapotec Tapestry

"Through weaving, one can come to know the meaning of life and breath..."

The Zapotecs, known as the "Cloud People," dwelt in the southern highlands of central Mesoamerica, specifically in the Valley of Oaxaca. In a world where centuries-old traditional crafts are slowly disappearing, the history and culture of the Zapotec weavers of the Oaxaca Valley is alive and thriving.

As tribal historian and archeologist Martin Link once said, it often happens that "when a culture experiences strife, stress, and chaos, the people turn to their art to express themselves eloquently." Indeed, each Zapotec tapestry with its wonderful colors depicts rich culture, originality, and creativity.

As we gaze upon a Zapotec rug today, we are witnessing the gradual transformation of the Native American blanket, each reflecting the spirit of its maker. Every piece of wool textile is hand-spun, cannot be successfully imitated by a machine, and will last a lifetime with proper care.
